Customer comment:

Don't look at another Perl book until you have read this.. This is it. The big cahuna of introductory Perl. This book has it all - great organization, a fresh writing style, examples, and an introduction from Grand Master of Perl himself, Larry Wall. Don't even buy or look at another Perl book if you are a novice and want to begin learning Perl.

Customer comment:

Depends on your learning style, but overall a GREAT book! I have read well over 50 reviews of this book, and while many seem to think that the book is great, both as a reference book and/or a book to learn Perl, there are a large number who also think that it does not make a good reference book, or that it isn't written well at all. I think that it really depends on your learning style, and your preivous experience with programming and computers in general (especially Unix). One thing that seems to be the trend almost everwhere, which I agree with, is that this is not a very good book to learn perl with...

A book better suited for this introductory task is one such as Learning Perl (the 'Llama Book') or one of the other 'tutorial' type books. However, the Camel book IS well suited as a reference book... GET IT!

Customer comment:

When I needed to learn CGI fast, I turned to a handbook. When I needed to build fast, high-performance web applications, I turned to The CGI/Perl Cookbook. It provided me with step-by-step walkthrough intruction which made me never want to put the book down. Although, there are a few minor bugs with the scripts on the CDROM, but they can be easily repaired. I would recommend this book to any person with a basic understanding of CGI.

Customer comment:

This book really taught me how to write CGI scripts in Perl for the web! At that time, I was only writing scripts for my own computer. Programming for the web is a totally different thing. You'll need to parse form inputs etc. This book taught me everything I needed to know about programming for the web. It contained lots of examples. The book itself was nicely divided into 16 chapters, all of which were simple, easy to understand, yet concise and clear...

Customer comment:

I thought I was an expert. I wasn't, but I am now! I've worked with PERL, including 5.0, for some time now. This book helped me get deeper into objects, references, modules (my own and others') and the internals of the source code.

Customer comment:

This is the 3rd Visual QG book for me (2 from Ms Castro) The information is right there in front of you not deep in a bunch of story, try to be funny nonsense. The formats are very easy to follow and for the $$ it is well worth it. If you are fast to pickup on concepts or you need a small reference to carry along this is it. Thanks.

Customer comment:

Finally, a book on programming CGI with Perl that shows how a complex application is constructed step by step. Most other Perl/CGI books I've seen, including the O'Reily books, are either pure reference with code taken out of context or they are simplistic examples that aren't practical. This book also has a brief explanation of Perl that is very concise and understandable.
